Where Africa Still Moves Freely

Go Serengeti - Tanzania Safari Tour Operator

The Serengeti National Park covers 14,763 square kilometres in northern Tanzania. It holds over 70 large mammal species and more than 500 bird species. More than two million wildebeest cross its plains each year between December and July.

About the Serengeti

One of Earth's Oldest Wild Place

The Serengeti National Park sits in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border. Animals have moved across its plains for over three million years. The land holds that age in every direction you look.

The terrain changes as you move through it. Short-grass plains cover the south. Open woodland fills the centre. Riverine forest runs along the Grumeti and Mara rivers in the north. Granite kopjes rise from flat ground in between.

The park holds the Big Five and much more. Lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, cheetahs, wild dogs, and over 500 bird species all live here. Every year, over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles complete a full clockwise loop across the ecosystem. It is the largest animal movement on land anywhere on earth.

The Great Migration

Each year, more than two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move across the Serengeti and into Kenya’s Masai Mara. It is the world’s largest land animal migration.

The herds follow rain and fresh grass while predators like lions, cheetahs, and crocodiles track them along the route. The Grumeti and Mara River crossings are the most dramatic moments of the journey.

The migration changes through the year, from calving season in the southern plains to northern river crossings between July and October.

Popular Safari Packages

The Serengeti connects naturally to other parks in northern Tanzania. Ngorongoro Crater sits 150 kilometres to the east. Tarangire National Park lies 250 kilometres south. Lake Manyara sits at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Our popular packages combine these areas into routes that make sense of the landscape and the distances between them. All packages start and end in Arusha. Prices vary by season, accommodation type, and group size.

Frequently Asked Questions About Serengeti Safaris

Planning a Serengeti safari raises practical questions. Below you will find direct answers to the ones we hear most often. They cover the best time to visit, what to pack, how to get to the park, visa requirements for Tanzania, and what wildlife you can expect to see in each season.

When is the best time to visit the Serengeti?

The best time to visit the Serengeti depends on what you want to see. July to October offers the northern river crossings and the highest wildlife density. January to March brings calving on the southern plains and large predator activity. The park is open and active all year. Each season has its own distinct character.

How long should a Serengeti safari be?

A minimum of three full days in the park gives you a solid experience. Five to seven days allows you to cover different zones and catch varied wildlife behaviour. Longer stays are worth considering if you want to time a specific stage of the migration in detail.

How do I get to the Serengeti National Park?

Most visitors fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport or Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. From Kilimanjaro, Arusha is a 45-minute drive. From Arusha, you drive to the park gate in approximately four to five hours. Small charter flights also operate between Arusha and several airstrips inside the Serengeti.

Do I need a visa to visit Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tanzania. You can apply online through the Tanzania e-visa portal before your trip. Indian passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online. We recommend applying at least three weeks before your departure date.

What should I pack for a Serengeti safari?

Pack light, neutral-coloured clothing in layers. Mornings are cool and afternoons are warm. A wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent are necessary. Binoculars make a large difference to game viewing. A camera with a long lens is worth bringing if wildlife photography is part of your plan.

Is the Serengeti safe to visit?

The Serengeti is a safe destination for travellers. Game drives take place inside designated park roads with trained, licensed guides. Walking safaris are led by armed guides in approved zones. We carry communication equipment on all trips and maintain contact with base camps at regular intervals.
